County of Donegal

The Comté of Donegal (in Gaelic Contae Dhún Na nGall ) is the County of Ireland located more at north. It is one of the three county of the Ulster which does not form part of the Six Counties of Ireland of North under British sovereignty. During its creation at the 16th century, it has some time called Comté of Tyrconnel (in Gaelic Tír Chonaill ), according to the old kingdom and principality of O' Donnells which existed at this place there, but wider.

The capital of the County is the town of Lifford but its more big city is Letterkenny. The county has a surface of: 4830 km ² for: 147264 inhabitants.

The County of Donegal is a whole of hills relatively low with a very cut out littoral. The whole of cliffs of Slieve League is the second higher cliff of Europe. Malin Head is the most septentrional point of Ireland. The climate is moderated and dominated by the influence of the Gulf Stream, causing fresh summers and wet winters. In broad the two islands are inhabited in a permanent way: Arranmore and Tory.

The area is one of the zones where the speech Gaelic is most long-lived with the Connemara. One speaks there Gaelic distinct from that about the remainder from the Ireland, because it resembles Scottish Gaelic. Donegal is also an area where the Irish traditional Musique is very present.

Donegal was occupied by men during more than nine thousand years and is famous for its history and its Archéologie. The farmers pre-Christians left the tombs which always punctuate the county, whereas they cohabit today with the vestiges of the Vikings. In the south, Lough Derg is a famous site of Pèlerinage while the town of Donegal has a Monastère franciscain dating from the XVIIe century.
