Geography of the County of Boulogne
The principal area of the historical county of Boulogne is what is called Bolted it which has geographical limits registered in the relief and the spirit of its inhabitants.
The pit or half Boutonnière of Bolted consists of obviously of Anticlinal which reverses the relief, since the chalk lets see the grounds limestones, marly and argillaceous subjacent. In the particular case, the buttonhole, directed NR. - O. - S. - O., is cut into two by the collapse which created the English Channel and the strait of the Pas-de-calais. The other part of the buttonhole is visible in England and is called the country of Weald which gave its name on a geological floor (the wealdien which belongs to the lower cretaceous).
History of the County of Boulogne
Boulogne before being called Bononia (sometimes Bolonia as Bologna in Italy) was identified with Portus Itius from which César undertook the conquest of Brittany, called now the Great Britain. Portus Itius became under the Roman Empire the Home port of the “Classis britannica” and of the traces of its general headquarter were identified in the current High-City about 1980. The wearing of departure of the troops is a beach now ensablée located at twelve miles in the north of Boulogne, whose modern name is Wissant and who is already identified in the song of Roland under his Saxon name Wit-sand.
Boulogne was famous with the Middle Ages for its headlight placed on high cliff right in the North and of which there remains a not very sure representation: it consisted of a tower of masonry with stages narrowing and at the top of which a fire burned.
The religious function of the city, sits of an antique évêché, is old and the pilgrimage with the Virgin of Boulogne is famous since the Middle Ages. So that the inhabitants of the Ile-de-France can pay homage to him, one created a secondary pilgrimage in the forest of Reopens (whose vestige is the Bois de Boulogne) which was going to support the Boulogne-the-small foundation of called nowadays the Boulogne-on-Seine. In the the Thirties, this devotion was revived by the transport of a statue placed in an automobile trailer to which one made make it tower of France.
