County of Berga

The county of Berga included/understood current comarque Berguedà, without the Vall of Lillet.

Origin

Its origin goes up with old the pagus Berga, a demarcation surely existing at the time of the Visigoths and the Romans, which coincided already with the territory of the antique tribe ibère of the bergistans or bergussis . At the beginning, the pagus of Berga belonged to the Comté of Cerdagne.

The expansion of the county of Cerdagne will make that this county had overflowed, during the IXe century, the mountainous barrier of the Serra del Cadí, the Tosa d' Alp, the Puigllançada and the Mogrony. At the beginning of the Xe century, the counts de Cerdagne organized the pagus of Berga in county, by naming there a Vicomte in 905. In 1035, the county of Berga had a border with the Arab territories : the walk of Berga, i.e., the sector of the Segarra conquered by the counts de Cerdagne during the XIe century, which included/understood a narrow fringe formed by Castellfollit de Riubregós, El Portell, Pujalt, Ferran, Gàver and Oluges, to finish close to Tàrrega, fringe limited to north and the south by the Comté of Urgell and by the Comté of Osona. In 1058, the count Ramon Guifré de Cerdagne will concede with the count de Barcelone the right to extend its domination on walk, beyond Oluges.

End of the county

In 1117, after death without descent of the count Bernat Guillem, the house comtale of Cerdagne dies out. Then, its fields it county of Cerdagne, the county of Berga and the County of Conflent - pass to the count Ramon Berenguer III of Barcelona, first cousin of Bernat Guillem. During the XIIe century, the Counts de Barcelone dismantle all the administrative organization of the county of Berga.
