County of Auvergne

The Auvergne was divided into several strongholds which bore all the name of Auvergne to the Middle Ages:

  1. the County of Auvergne
  2. the Dauphine of Auvergne
  3. the Ground of Auvergne
  4. and the episcopal County of Clermont

The county of Auvergne

The county of the Auvergne east one of oldest the seigniories of France, since it was already set up at the end of the Roman period. During the era mérovingienne, it becomes even temporarily a duchy.

The family of the Counts d' Auvergne controls the county since the tenth century. A crisis bursts within the family in 1155, date on which the count Guillaume VII of Auvergne is forced by his uncle Guillaume VIII of Auvergne to divide the county into two. Guillaume VIII takes again the county, while Guillaume VII must be satisfied title of dolphin of Auvergne.

In 1360, the king of France Jean II of France creates, on the old royal Earth of Auvergne, a duchy of Auvergne which is transmitted within the royal family.
