County of Artois

The county of Artois (néerl: Artezië ) is a Carolingian county ( comitatus ), organized by the counts Odalric and Ecfrid, then integrated in the Comté of Flanders by Baudouin II towards 898, then by Arnoul.

A new territorial principality is consisted division of the county of Flanders to form the Dot given by Philippe of Alsace, count de Flandre, with his niece Isabelle de Hainaut at the time of its marriage with Philippe Auguste in 1180.

The Traité of Guînes of 1212 gives the king Surface-on-the-Lily, Saint-Omer and Guînes. The remainder is acquired with the Crown after the Flemish defeat with Bouvines and the Traité of Melun of 1226. The Artois becomes then the prerogative of Robert, the last wire of Louis VIII.

After the death of the count Robert II with the battles of Courtrai in 1302, a successional quarrel opposes his/her daughter, the countess Mahaut, with its own nephew Robert III, which represents the rights of his/her Philippe father, died in 1298 with the Bataille of Furnes.

The Artois passes then to Jeanne, girl of Mahaut and the count Othon IV of Burgundy, which wife the king Philippe V. This one gives Artois to his/her Jeanne daughter, married with the duke of Burgundy Eudes IV.

To died from their grandson Philippe de Rouvre in 1361, Artois returns to a son of the second girl of Philippe V, the count de Flandre Louis de Male. The girl of this one, Marguerite III of Flanders, wife Philippe Bold the, duke of Burgundy, in 1369.

With died of Louis de Male in 1384, Artois between thus in the vast territorial complex which is the Burgundian State. Seized by Louis XI with the fall of Charles Bold the and set up in Seneschalsy, then officially yielded to the king by the treated of Arras, in 1482, it returns to the Habsbourgs by the treated of Senlis, in 1493.

It will return to France only to the Traité of the Pyrenees in 1659.

In 1297, the county of Artois is set up in county-peerage.
