Country of Othe

The country of Othe is a natural Région of France of wooded hills located at the borders of the Aube and Yonne. Its name means meeting of trees in Ligurian.

Although located in Champagne, country of produced Othe, not of the Wine, but of the Cider.

History

The prehistoric time left many witnesses. Around Aix-in-Othe, indices of the presence of the man were discovered because the presence of the rivers and the sources in the area contributed for much in the installation of populations.

Neolithic , it remains a collection of parts campigniennes, flint tools used for agriculture and coming from a prehistoric industry. Time characterized by the cereal culture, domestication of the animals, pottery, weaving, grouping in villages, polishing of the stone. Exceptional, one can note the presence of a remarkable polishing machine known as the stone with the ten fingers on the commune of Villemaur-on-Valve.

Then the country of Othe is occupied around 2000 years before our era by people come from the East, the Ligures. And those were driven out by the Celtes which passed by the Rhine around 900 years before our era. The Celts adopted their habits and religion.

Then the Romains come borrowing the Roman way Agrippa whose country of Othe still has some traces. Later, the confrontations between Counts de Champagne and Dukes of Burgundy, respectively pledged with the England and crowns of France left only few vestiges of the many manors and castles which were built during the Moyen-âge.

Geographical location

The country of Othe is delimited in north by the valley of the Vanne, in the east by the town of Troyes, in the south by the national 77 and secondary road 943 and in the west by the valley of Yonne.

Access

The country of Othe is accessible by the highway A5 with the exits Sens, Villeneuve-the Archevêque and Troyes - Western, by the highway A6 with the exits Joigny and Auxerre - Northern and by the main roads 6, 60 and 77 which surround the country.

Economy

The industry of the textile was very present since the end of the XVIIIème century until the beginning of the XIXème century. The hosiery takes over weaving which declines and with the industrial revolution, hosiery develops on all the sector. That generates two structures which cohabit: initially small independent workshops, then factories established in the middle-class centers which make work in residence country workmen having a trade.

However following the long crisis of the textile, the country has to diversify its economic fabric. The dash is given by the services thanks to the Forêt of Othe which played an important economic part around the merchants of wood, the loggers, the coalmen. To the die wood comes to be added the agricultural activity organized around the culture of cereals but also on the revival of the production of the local farm cider of the Country of Othe.

Benefitting from these natural wealths, tourism develops around and various the tourist site footpaths of the country.
