Country of Illinois (News-France)

The Country of Illinois or High-Louisiana was an administrative and political subdivision of the Louisiana at the time of the News-France. The chief town of the Country of Illinois was Fort of Chartres, at the point of meeting of the river the Mississippi and the Meramec. The area, little populated French colonists, knew an effervescence more marked between the confluences of the Mississippi, Meramac and the rivers of Kaskaskias. Living narrow frequentations with the “wild ” the population was gathered in several villages: Kaskaskia, Holy-Genevieve, Saint-Philippe, Meadow of the Rock, Cahokia and Strong Vincennes a little more in the east, the accesses of the Ohio.
