Country of Herve

The country of Herve or plate of Herve is a natural area located in between Vesdre - and Meuse, in Province of Liege (Wallonia/Belgium). It covers an approximate surface of 450 km ² and extends on the territory from ten communes of which Aubel, Blegny, Dalhem, Herve, Olne, Plombières, Soumagne, Thimister-Clermont, Visé and Welkenraedt. It ensures to some extent the transition between the valley from the Meuse and the German border.

It is an undulating area characterized by its landscapes of meadows and fruit trees and its villages picturesque, evoking the Norman scrap-metal. The place is particularly appreciated tourists for its tourist walks, its curiosities and its gastronomy.

Geography and geology

It is a calcareous plate prolonging the Hesbaye and the Montagne Saint-Pierre, limited to north by the border Dutchwoman, in the east by the German border , in the south by the valley of the Vesdre and in the west by the valley of the Meuse. The peak of division of water between the Meuse and Vesdre is borrowed by main road 3 connecting Liege to Aachen. The Western end of the plate is occupied by the suburbs of Liege (Fléron, Beyne-Heusay).

In the North-East is the Vaalserberg, top of the Netherlands and not tri-border.

Like the photograph shows it below, the country of Herve is characterized by a landscape of Bocage: prevalence of the meadows, meadows and orchards, surrounded by hedges, often in hawthorn. Contrary to the Openfield, it is thus about a closed landscape. The habitat is dispersed, characteristic made possible by the multitude of water points disseminated on all the territory. The villages of the country of Herve are low-size and gather only the collective functions in general: school, church, administration, village hall, post, etc the farms are indeed dispersed in the Finage and seldom present within the village. This dispersion of the habitat explains the presence of innumerable hamlets, localities and country lanes. Only some boroughs make exception: Herve, Aubel, Blegny.

History
