Country of Albret

The Country of Albret (in Gascon Occitan Labrit/Albret ), in its modern acceptance, applies to the slopes of the Gascogne, on left bank of the the Garonne, corresponding to the south-west of the department of the Lot-et-Garonne.

It draws its name from old the Duché of Albret, whose Nérac was the capital. This name comes in fact from the close Albret, in the Landes of Gascogne, in which the house of Albret was originating.

One will be able to break up it into 2 coherent entities:

In addition:
  • the Brulhois skirting the the Garonne more in the east, until the Tarn-et-Garonne, also belonged to the Duché of Albret.
  • It was the same for the Ténarèze or Condomois (mainly in the Département of Gers) which one will rather bring closer to the Armagnac.
  • the part of the Country of Albret belonging to the Moors of Gascogne, constitutes the Landes of the Lot-et-Garonne

The country Heart of Albret

The Country Heart of Albret , or Néracais , is centered on the lower course of the Baïse. It is bordered in the west by the Albret of the Landes of Gascogne (delimited by the Gélise), in the south by the Condom ois or Ténarèze and in the east by the Brulhois (beyond the valley of the Auvignon).
