In a general way a countdown is a calculation towards a known end. It can be a question of the countdown of the days before the re-entry of the classes, or the minutes before an explosion.

In the field of the Astronautics, the countdown is part of the Launch timetable of a launcher, which precedes an order by firing taken as moment of reference, or takeoff. This countdown is then followed by the positive Compte.
