Count of the Rows

Table of the Rows

Order peerage-book created by Pierre Ier of Russia on January 13rd, 1722. On this date, a Oukase creates the tchin or table of the rows ( табельорангах ) which determines the degree of dignity in the nobility by the hierarchy of the functions (14 degrees). From certain row the " servant of État" the " acquires; nobility personnelle" , then above a row more raised, the " nobility héréditaire". The threshold of the classes which allot these nobilities is different for the civil and military civils servant.

The first table of 1722 was very detailed. Mixed with it even single ranks and particular functions (for example, direction of a port at such place). One found there also transfers direct of denominations of foreign origin imported such as they are by the tsar, in particular in the Marine object of all the attentions of Pierre the Large one: " vitsé-admiral" (vice-admiral), " Chaout' bènakht" (of Dutch " schaut bij nacht" ), " arir-admiral" (admiral of the back keeps), " ober-chter-krigs-komissar" ( ober-steuer-kriegs-komissar ) etc

This table evolved/moved quickly at the century following while preserving however different denominations for the various classes. Paul Ier of Russia (tsar of 1796 to 1801) simplified the system while not making appear in the table the only ranks or titles of civils servant. The complete table covered denominations in the civil field for the civils servant of the Court, the Administration, the Mines and Teaching, in the military field, for the Infantry, the Artillery and the Genius, the Cavalry, the Guard, the Cossacks and the Navy, and finally in the religious field, for the black clergy (monks and dignitaries of the Church - subjected to the celibacy) and the white clergy (the priests, obligatorily married).

Until 1917, all the Russian company lives under the obsession of the tchin . A student is located at the 14th rank, a lieutenant with 12th, a colonel or an adviser of college with 6th (case of the father of Lénine), a general or an adviser deprived with 2nd, the field-marshal and the chancellor of the Empire with 1st. One is really regarded as noble starting from the 8th rank, category which represents with the XIX° century approximately 200.000 people.

The example of medicine

The first-year student of medicine is classified with the 14th rank. At the end of the studies, when it obtains a station in the administration, the doctor reaches the 9th rank of " to advise titulaire" (captain in the army). If it obtains the doctorate, the doctor is then with the 8th rank (" assessor of collège" , equivalent of commander). Then, a slow rise proceeds until more the great honors. In general one rises of a row every 4 years of services with variations according to the rewards and the conditions of exercise (a stay in Siberia accelerates the rate/rhythm). The doctor can reach the 3° row of " to advise secret" but only the favor of the tsar can confer unhoped-for the 2nd rank of " to advise secret actuel".
