Count de Suffolk
The title of count de Suffolk was created three times in the Pairie of England, the last time in 1603 for Thomas Howard. There were also three creations of duke of Suffolk , and one of marquis de Suffolk .
The title is associated with the county of Suffolk in the east of England, one of ten more important of the country.
History of the title
William of the Pole was created marquis de Suffolk in 1444, and duke of Suffolk in 1448. There were then two additional creations of the title of duke. The second creation intervened for Charles Brandon, a close relation of Henri VIII. It was succeeded by its two sons which died of the Suette at a few hours of interval. Charles Brandon thus holds the record of the person having carried less time a British title of peerage (Wilfried Stamp could claim this " to him; titer" , but only thanks to the legal Fiction).
The third creation of the title of duke was for Henry Grey, 3rd Marquis de Dorset in 1551. It succeeds in placing his daughter Lady Jeanne Grey on the throne of England in 1553, after the death of its nephew Edouard VI. It succeeds in being maintained there 9 days before being reversed then put at dead in 1554 by Marie I {{Re}} of England. Henry grey will be him later also decapitated 11 days.
The admiral Thomas Howard was the son of Thomas Howard, 4th Duc of Norfolk. He was made count shortly after the accession of Jacques I {{er}}.
The count de current Suffolk holds the following subsidiary titles: count de Berkshire (created in 1626), Viscount Andover (1622) and baron Howard de Charlton (1622), all in the peerage of England.
The family seat of the count is in Charlton Park, close to Malmesbury, Wiltshire.
