Count de Gloucester

The title of count de Gloucester was created several times in the Pairie of England. It is extinct today.

The county of Gloucester, the Gloucestershire is located at the south-west of the England, in edge of the Wales.

History of the title

Following the death of her husband Gilbert de Clare, 7th Count d' Hertford and 3rd count de Gloucester, Jeanne d' Acre married secretly Ralph de Monthermer, 1st baron Monthermer, a knight of his house, in 1297. His/her father, the king Edouard I {{er}}, enragea by learning this marriage from low prestige, and decided to throw Monthermer in prison. Jeanne had to intensely plead her cause to make it release.

It was slackened in June 1297, and the king authorized it to carry the title of count de Gloucester as long as Jeanne would be in life. There existed already a count de Gloucester of the 4th creation, therefore the title which Monthermer carried was simply honorary.
