Count de Chester

The title of count de Chester was one of most powerful titrates medieval England. The Cheshire belonged to the counts, as well as the honors of Chester , of the grounds and the places in all England.

History of the title

In 1237, after the death of John Scot, the title is repurchased with the sisters of Ranulf de Blondeville by the king Henri III, which gave it to his/her Edouard son.

Since 1301, the title is generally given to the heir designated to the throne of England. Since 1399, it is given conjoitement with the title of Prince de Galles.

The first creation (1071)

The second creation (1121)

  • 1121 - 1129  : Ranulph de Briquessart (  † about 1129). Wire of Maude d' Avranches, sister of Hugues d' Avranches.
  • 1129 - 1153  : Ranulph de Gernon (  † 1153). Wire of the precedent  ;
  • 1153 - 1181  : Hugues de Kevelioc (1147 - 1181). Wire of the precedent  ;
  • 1181 - 1232  : Ranulph de Blondeville (1172 - 1232). Wire of the precedent.

The third creation (1232)

  • 1232 - 1237  : John Scot (about 1207 - 1237), Count de Huntingdon. Nephew of the precedent  ;
  • 1237 - 1246  : Edouard, Lord de Chester (1239 - 1307), but without the title of count. He became Edouard Ier of England in 1272.

The fourth creation (1264)

the title is taken again by the crown.

The fifth creation (1301)

  • 1301 - 1307  : Edouard Plantagenêt (1284 - 1327), became Edouard II of England in 1307. Wire of Edouard Ist

the title is taken again by the crown.

The sixth creation (1312)

  • 1312 - 1327  : Edouard Plantagenet (1312 - 1377), became Edouard III of England in 1327. Wire of Edouard II.

Then, the title is given separately to that of Prince de Galles with the heirs designated to the crown of the United Kingdom.

  • 1343 - 1376  : Edouard, the Prince Noir (1330 - 1376). Wire of Edouard III  ;

  • 1376 - 1377  : Richard of Bordeaux (1367 - 1400). Wire of the precedent. Reach the crown in 1377 under the name of Richard II.

From 1399, the title is associated with that of Prince de Galles.
