Count Palatine

The Count Palatine is a title of imperial Count Carolingien or Germanic Roman Holy roman Empire. The palatine county or Palatinat corresponds to the associated field.
The origin of this title comes from the counts of the palate which lived in imperial palaces establish by the emperors Carolingien S and the emperors of the Saint Germanic Roman Empire in each Duché of their empire, to represent the imperial authority there.
Of all these Count Palatines, two only were maintained powerful:
- Count Palatines of Burgundy, whose field became the Franche-Comté,
- Count Palatines of the Rhine whose field became the Palatinat of the Rhine.
At the XIXe century, this title could be allotted by the pope: thus Québécois the Prime Minister Honore Mercier accepted from it the honor by the pope Leon XIII.
