Council of Sutri (1046)

In 1046, the Germanic emperor Henri III came with an army in front of Rome. Invited to put an end to papal anarchy, it made join together a council with Sutri.

The bishops, tired disorders, deposited the two popes Benoît IX and Sylvestre III, and Gregoire VI which could not deny that it had acquired his tiara by Simonie, was seen constrained to abdicate.

Under the pressure of Henri III, the council elected pope, in December 1046, the bishop of Bamberg, Suidger, which took the name of Clément II. To a German, known as the Didier abbot was taken, because among the Roman clergy one could find nobody who was worthy of such an honor. And all, clergy, people and barons swore never not to crown a pope without the consent of their Patrice, who from now on was the Germanic emperor.
