Couiza

Couiza is a common French, located in the department of the Aude and the area Languedoc-Roussillon.

Its inhabitants is Couizanais.

Geography

Couiza is located in the middle of the High-valley of the Aude, with 16 kilometers of Limoux and 13 km of Quillan. She is next to the village of Montazels and the small town close to Espéraza.

History

Couiza is very old. One finds of them traces in the history of the Abbaye Sainte-Marie de Lagrasse. It is an important crossroads between the high-valley of the Aude and the plain of Carcassonne, and towards Corbières Western via Arques and Rennes-the-Castle. It is a borough strengthened in XIIe century.

At the time of the war against the cathares, the cross seize some and it falls between the hands from Pierre de Voisins (who becomes also lord of Rennes-the-Castle, from Coustaussa, of Arques and other places). The end of the dynasty of the Neighbors coincides with the construction of the castle towards 1513 by alliance with the family of Joyeuse. This family will give important characters among the intendants of the Languedoc. Guillaume III of Merry settles in 1562 with the castle of Couiza. He is initially bishop of Alet pui lieutenant-general in 1561 and marshal in 1582. He is also the chief of the catholic Ligue and organizes the fight against Montmorency and huguenots during the wars of religion.

Couiza is at the end of the 19th century and the years 1930 an active industrial borough centered on the hat industry.
