It was a commune of 14.800 inhabitants before the fusion of the communes in 1977

History

The commune, located on the edges of Sambre seems to have been occupied since antiquity as various archaeological excavations attest it.

The very old St. Lawrence church, built as from the 11th century rests on the remainders of a sanctuary Carolingien.

During the French revolution, the common one bore the charming name of Violet-on-Sambre .

It is in Couillet that Ernest Solvay installat its first factory of soda at the 19th century. The factory is from now on completely shaven. Only the Casino Solvay , last vestige of the social will of this precursor remains.

Particularly developed before the years 1960 thanks to the steel-works, now shaven, and with coal mining, the commune is nothing any more but the reflection of its gloss passed since the closing of its heavy industries and extractive.
