Couarde-on-Sea

the Couarde-on-Sea is a common French, located on the Ile de Ré in the department of the Charente-Maritime and the area Poitou-Charentes.

The inhabitants of Couarde are Couardais and Couardaise.

Geography

Couarde is located on the southern part of the Ile de Ré, on the level of Loix.

The commune has very beautiful beaches, with dunes. A small port " Goisil" leading by a channel to the Northern coast of the island. The houses built recently around the downtown area are also spread out towards the West. the north of the village is crossed by the secondary road.

History

The history of Couarde such as we know it is fuzzy. It is a Hameaux before the French revolution, inhabited by vine growers and salt makers. Later Vignoble around the village appears, thus bringing an increase in the population; but at the end of the XIXe century and at the beginning of the XXe century, takes place a demographic fall, in party because of the Phylloxéra.

At the beginning of the XXe century, tourism develops in Couarde, and the commune becomes a seaside resort. Currently, this tourism dominates.

Activity

The activities are, with share the flourishing Tourisme, for the majority agricultural; vines, potatoes, asparaguses are cultivated goshawks of the dwellings.

Economic life of the village east thus important.

the bandstand, built just beside the church, currently remains only Island.

the church of Couarde is dedicated to Our-Lady-in-the Annonciation, and was built at the end of the XIXe century, in full center of the village. Its style is neo-gothic.

the war memorial of Couarde was built after the First World War, to commemorate
the small port of Goizil (opening on the Northern coast)

Ivan Peychès (1906-1978), member of the Academy of Science, honorary scientific director of the Company of Saint-Gobain, Officer of the Legion of Honor. It is buried in the communal cemetery.
