Cotopaxi
Cotopaxi , Volcano of Ecuador culminating to 5.897 m in the south-east of Quito, the capital of the country. It is the third higher volcano of the world still in activity after the Sabancaya (5.967 m, Peru) and Los Ojos del Salado (6.893 m, Chile). It represents a perfect cone whose crater measures approximately 700 m in diameter. Its eruption the most important date of 1877 when it destroyed several cities and valleys.
At an altitude of more than 5.500 m extrèmement, the glacial character of the peak makes the eruptions dangerous because the lava mixing with snow launches on the slopes of flow mud loopholes. Because of this mixing, the highest volcanos are frightening: the speed of the épanchements surprises the populations of the valley.
Its name Cotopaxi means neck of the moon in Quechua (local language). The moon indeed comes to be posed above the volcano, thus giving the impression which Cotopaxi is the neck of the moon…
It is also about the name of a province of the country (chief town: Latacunga), located just at the south of the province of Pichincha where the capital of the country Quito is located.
Cotopaxi was climbed for the first time by Wilhelm Reiss in 1872.
