Joaquín Rodríguez known as “Costillares” , born with Seville (Spain) the July 20th 1743, died with Madrid (Spain) the January 27th 1800, was a Spanish Matador.
Presentation
“Costillares” follows the traces of his/her father, the matador sévillan Luis Rodríguez. It begins its career like
Banderillero in the
Cuadrilla of Pedro Palomo, then takes the alternate
towards
1763 and gains many triumphs in its birthplace. In
1767, it is presented to Madrid. From 1775, its competition with
Pedro Romero starts. This one being the favorite matador of the people, “Costillares” very quickly becomes the favorite of the aristocracy. From 1790, it does not appear any more in the sporadic arena but of manner.
Innovations
“Costillares” is generally regarded as the creator of the master key of
hoods called “speedwell”, as like the inventor of the Estocade
volapié . It was one of the first to organize the
cuadrillas bullfighters in a rigorous way: hitherto, each bullfighter (matadors,
Banderillero S,
Picador S) were independent and were committed separately by the organizer of the bullfight; starting from “Costillares”, banderilleros and picadors become the employees of the matador. He was also the first to organize the
Lidia in a rigorous way, separating it into three
tercios . Lastly, it traced the outline of the “
Bullfighter's costume. ”
He is thus regarded as one of the principal fathers of the modern bullfight.
