Cosson
The Cosson is a river of France, long of 96,5 km, and affluent of the Beuvron which it joined 1 km before this last is not thrown in the the Loire.
Geography
The river takes its source with Valve-on-Cosson in the Sologne, then sprinkles Ferté-Saint-Aubin, Ferté-Saint-Cyr, then passes close to the Château of Chambord where its course was diverted to form a channel and to feed the ditches. It continues its course to pass to Vineuil where it becomes parallel to the Loire because of the valley opposite Blois and finally, joins the Beuvron with Candé-on-Beuvron.
Affluent - distributary
Cosson has an important affluent, the Canne, of which it receives water upstream Ligny-le-Ribault.
It has also a distributary, the Old man-Cosson . It is about an arm which is formed, and did not join any more the principal course. It is thrown directly in the Loire.
Hydrology
Cosson is a fairly abundant river, a little more than the majority of the rivers of plain of the catchment area of the Loire. Its flow was observed over one 16 years period (1968-1985) to Vineuil, locality of the Département of Loir-et-Cher located at little distance from its confluence with the Beuvron. The catchment area of the river is there of 710 km ², that is to say a little more 90% of this last which makes 779 km ² in its totality.
The interannual medium flow or module of the river with Vineuil is of 3,97 m ³ a second.
Cosson present of the seasonal fluctuations of flow marked enough, with high waters of winter-spring carrying the average flow monthly on a level located between 5,46 and 8,98 m ³ a second, from January to May included (with a maximum very Net in February), and low waters of be-autumn, from July to October included, with a fall of the monthly medium flow going up to 0,744 m ³ in August, which remains still appreciable.
With the low water level, the VCN3 can fall until 0,13 m ³ a second, in the event of dry period quinquennial, that is to say 130 liters a second, which becomes rather severe (see note).
As for the risings, they can be rather important, characteristic shared by the majority of the affluents of plain of the basin of the Loire.
Thus the QIX 2 and QIX 5 or calculated flows of biennial and quinquennial rising are worth respectively 29 and 41 m ³ a second. The QIX 10 or calculated flow of decennial rising is of 49 m ³ a second, the QIX 20 of 56 m ³, while the QIX 50 was not calculated fault of duration of sufficient observation to determine it (see note).
The recorded maximum daily output with Vineuil during the period of observation, was of 52,5 m ³ a second on May 15th, 1985. By comparing this value on a QIX scale of the river, one notes that this rising was a little more than of a vicennial nature, and thus intended to rather frequently reproduce.
Cosson is not an extremely abundant river. The Lame of water past in its catchment area is of 179 millimetres annually, which is definitely lower than the overall average of France all confused basins, like to the whole of the basin of the the Loire (244 millimetres). The specific Débit of the river (or Qsp) posts of this fact a very average figure: 5,6 liters a second and per square kilometer of basin.
