Biography

Cosme III of Médicis was the son of Ferdinand II of Médicis and Vittoria Della Rovere.

Its long reign will not influence the decline of the Toscane. Very pious, it ceased granting protection to the scientists against the Inquisition and imposed an austere lifestyle on the Florentins, accustomed to the festivals. He was worried all his life by the problem of the succession, initially because its marriage in 1661 with Marguerite-Louise of Orleans was very badly matched, him austere religious bigot and she jovial, marriage during which took place the ballet of Atlas, gigantic automat imagined by Ferdinando Tacca and typical of the kind colossal Art.

Problems of succession also due to his/her children who could not have male descent: his/her oldest son died in 1713 without to have had children and the marriage of its second wire, Gian Gastone, more did not make it possible to ensure the following descent.
