Cosmas of Prague

Cosmas of Prague (approximately 1045October 21st 1125) is an ecclesiastic of Bohemia, a writer, Historien and chronicler born in a noble family of Bohemia. Between 1075 and 1081, it studies with Liege. On its return in Bohemia, he marries Božetěcha with which he probably has a son and becomes priest. In 1086, Cosmas is named prebendary of Prague, a position which ensures him of the high incomes. For this reason, he frequently travels to Europe.

Its Magnum opus , written in Latin is entitled Chronica Boemorum ( Chronique of the Gipsies ) and is divided into three books:

  • the first, completed in 1119, starts with the creation of the world and is completed in the year 1038. It describes the foundation of the Czech State by the first Slavic ones of Bohemia in the neighborhoods of the year 600 and the foundation of the dynasty of the Přemyslides with Přemysl and his wife Libuše.
  • the second describes the years 1038 - 1092 with the reigns of Břetislav and Vratislav.
  • the third covers the period 1092 - 1125 and the civil war which bursts with dead of Vratislav. It is completed with the reign of Vladislav between 1109 and 1125, year of died of Cosmas.
