It is the natural girl of Fantine and Tholomyès, a young unsteady student resulting from a rich person provincial family. Fantine is given up by Tholomyès. In the urgency, she naively entrusts her daughter to a couple of landlords of the village of Montfermeil, the Thénardier.
These Thénardier will prove to be individuals of the worst species. They will be odious with the child by treating it as their servant while requiring always more money of Fantine which was established with Montreuil-sur-Mer, its natale.
In front of the bed where Fantine expires, Jean Valjean, then mayor of Montreuil, makes the promise with dead to deal with Cosette. It thus goes to Thénardier but will be able to withdraw Cosette from their claws only in theirs buying. The life of the young girl is transformed and it peacefully passes the remainder of its childhood in a convent of Paris where Valjean is jardinier.
Later, at the time of its daily walks with Valjean with the Garden of Luxembourg, Cosette notices a young student, Marius, and they fall in love.
