Così fan tutte

Così fan tutte (" Thus they make toutes" , in Italian) is a Opera-puffs out in two acts, put in music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on a booklet of Lorenzo da Ponte, and created the January 26th 1790 in Burgtheater of Vienna.

The complete title is Cosi fan tutte (ossia the scuola degli amanti) , that one can also return by All the same ones, or the School of the lovers .

Act I

The scene opens on a tavern where Don Alfonso, cynical with wish, highly discusses with two young soldiers her friends, Guglielmo and Ferrando. Young people claim that their been engaged are faithful and honest ( the mia capacious Dorabella not E ), whereas Alfonso tries to render comprehensible to them that the fidelity of the women concerns the Utopia ( E the delle fede femmine like the araba fenice ).

Whereas the conversation envenime, Alfonso proposes a bet: it will have to show them that the woman inconstant… their is promised in marriage in particular. For that, they agree to be subjected to its will and to try to allure their clean been engaged under a picturesque disguise. Stake: 100 sequins. Some of their victory, they dream already of what they will do with this sum rondelette ( Una beautiful serenata ).

In their garden, Fiordiligi (been engaged of Guglielmo) and his Dorabella sister (been engaged to Ferrando) contemplate the portraits of their beloveds ( O guarda, Sorella! ). They ask the Love to punish them if ever they changed lovers. Alfonso occurs, the demolished mine ( Vorrei to dir E horn not Ho ), announcing to them that their been engaged must leave the day-even for the regiment. A scene of tearing good-byes follows, which reassures the young soldiers: how been engaged if attached could one day change character? Alfonso has fun any only more. The scene finishes on the wishes that the three form so that the softest winds accompany the crossing by the two soldiers ( Soave sia it vento ).

Despina, the maidservant of the two young women, takes the event with philosophy: two lovers leave to the war, if they return one day from there, so much better, if not, still better (two from lost, ten of found!). She claims that there is nothing less faithful than a man, especially a soldier ( In uomini, in soldati sperare fedeltà ). That they are thus diverted! The amantes are scandalized by such a reasoning…

Against a little gold, Alfonso convinces Despina to help it in its company, without however revealing the strings of them to him. She will be unaware of indeed that the two foreigners who will come to present their homages to his mistresses are not other than their lovers allegedly parties. It presents them to him disguised ( Alla bleated Despinetta VI presento amici miei ), and their pace is not so beautiful to see (antidotes with the love, claims she). Its mistresses occur, and surprise the two foreigners in their house. Alfonso returns, applicant to find two of the best friends there than it ever had. Two young people begin an assiduous court, but both amantes refuse to hear some more. They are withdrawn after having praised their constancy and their fidelity in spite of the absence from their two been engaged ( As scoglio immoto remained )

Are the two soldiers persuaded that the bet is won ( E voi ridete? ). Alfonso moderates their heats and prepares the second phase of its battle plan.

Sad and faint, Fiordiligi and Dorabella complain about their fate, when both " étrangers" arrive, followed by Alfonso: they would have drunk arsenic in order to shorten the sufferings that the two young women so cruel to them impose to them. Remained only with both failing, they are tenderized. The doctor occurs ( Eccov' it medico ): it is about Despina disguised, which, by a method mesmérienne, will save both poisoned. Whereas the two women are tenderized more and more, dying them ressuscitent and, in one is delirious idyllic, take them for goddesses ( Dove sound? … ). Then, they claim each one a kiss, which makes move back the two sisters ( Dammi a bacio, O me tesoro ).

Act II

Despina causes the two sisters ( Andate there, che siete due odd ragazze ) and is not explained their behavior at the time of the preceding scene. It launches out in a course ( Una gave has quindici year… ) on what should know and to make a woman as of the 15 years age, (inter alia knowing where devil with the tail!). Here it is the part, and the two sisters put themselves to think of it. They choose each one that of both of which they will have to undergo assiduities ( Prenderò which brunettino ). Alfonso occurs and invites the two young women to come to attend a beautiful spectacle in the garden: the two lovers interpret pastoral ( Secondate, aurette amiche ) in the honor of the sisters, who find that ridiculous. Then Alfonso and Despina bring closer the two couples, which leave each one on their side to walk and badiner.

Guglielmo pretends a faintness in front of Dorabella, it allures it until him to offer pendentive in the shape of heart, and to take the portrait of Ferrando which it carries in a medallion ( It core VI dono ). After a short resistance, it yields to its advances.

On its side, Ferrando battles with Fiordiligi (récitatif accompanied Barbara! Perched fuggi? then air Ah lo veggio, quell' animated bleated… ), believes to overcome, then yields, desperate. Fiordiligi wants to catch up with it ( I.E.(internal excitation) leaves… felt… ah No… ) then reflects and is sorry, in a prayer, with his/her Guglielmo lover left to the war and which it failed to betray ( Per pietà Ben me perdona… )

The two conquerors find ( Amico, abbiamo vinto! ), persuaded Ferrando that the refusal which it wiped was also inflicted in Guglielmo. Guglielmo, it, are charmed to learn that Fiordiligi remained to him faithful… but it must acknowledge well with his friend that Dorabella yielded ( It me ritratto! Ah perdida! ). He however admits that the character of the women is not always that which one hopes for ( Donne crumb, the fatte has tanti… ). Ferrando, remained only, has evil to see clearly in its heart, shared between anger to be betrayed and the love which it always tests for Dorabella (récitatif accompanied In qual fietro contrasto then cavatine Tradito, schernito ).
Alfonso joined it, accompanied by Guglielmo, which claims its share of the stake by putting forward in a cruel way with Ferrando that Dorabella could resist with difficulty such a ladykiller, and that on the contrary, Fiordiligi could never have betrayed a man such as him. Alfonso makes the point to him that one should not sell the skin of the bear ( foll' E which cervello che sulla frasca ancor sells the uccello ).

Dorabella acknowledges that it was let easily take with the trap love but which it finds delicious that ( E' amore a ladroncello ), while Fiordiligi reproaches him. This one erects scaffolding a plan to save the two couples in danger: the sisters will disguise themselves as soldiers to go to find incognito their lovers true. However, before it could put its plan at execution, ( FRA gli amplessi ) Ferrando occurs ( ED intanto ) and finally succeeds in alluring it. Guglielmo, which attended the scene, does not hide its anger ( Oh poveretto me ). Ferrando is then allowed to return the currency of its coin to him. Alfonso proposes the solution to them to punish them: to marry.

He sings the following worms to them:

Tutti accusan gives it, ED io the scuso

thousand volte Al dì cangiano amore;
Altri a vizio lo chiama ED altri a uso,
ED has me by necessità LED core.
the amante che if trova alfin deluso
Not condanni the altrui, my it landlord errore;

What wants to say:

"Everyone shows the women, and me I excuse them to change love thousand times per day; the ones call that a defect, the others a practice, as for me I believe that it is a need for the heart. It is not necessary that the deceived lover condemns the others, but its own error is reproached: that they are young people or old, beautiful or ugly, repeat with me: they do all ainsi."

The final scene is that of the weddings ( Fate presto, O curry amici ) prepared by Despina; the two couples make their entry ( Benedetti I doppi coniugi ) drink together… Alfonso introduces the notary, who is not other than Despina disguised once more ( Augurandovi ogni bucket ) to read the contract, reading shortened by the enthusiasm of the two wives who sign well quickly… Then one hears again the brass band which had accompanied the departure by the two soldiers towards the regiment ( Bella vita militar ). Alfonso pretends panic in front of the imminent return of the soldiers. The two sisters hide their new husbands in an contiguous room, and rely on Alfonso. Quickly repaired, the two soldiers make their appearance ( Sani E salvi ). Everyone pretends the surprise… The lovers are astonished by the icy reception that reserve to them their promised… Then they discover the notary… who, to the great displeasure of the two sisters, proves to be Despina… while Ferrando collects the marriage contract! the two soldiers finally let burst their anger… the sisters are sorry by preventing them from entering the room where are supposed to hide their new husbands. They enter there despite everything and come out from it with half disguised again ( has voi inchina ). The three women do not return from there, in particular Despina which discovers that it was the instrument being unaware of of this machination.

Alfonso admits finally that it is responsible for this imbroglio of bad taste ( V' ingannai my fu the inganno ). It reconciles them and all's well that ends well ( Fortunato E the uom )…
