Coruscant
Coruscant is a major fictitious planet in the universe of the Star Wars .
Called “the Pivot” or “the Jewel of the Worlds of the Core”, it is located close to the center of the galaxy, in edge of the Core and was the capital of the Galactic République, then of the Galactic Empire and finally of the Nouvelle Republic after the fall of the Empire. Probably the cradle of humanity, this world from time immemorial was the nerve center of the galaxy. It is with coordinates 0-0-0 in the galactic space reference mark, with the intersection of the commercial main roads.
The planet cosmopolitan and is entirely urbanized, lit permanently day like night. The oceans were drained since many millenia and the polar icecaps supply fresh water planet, while the near total of the food products of the life of the every day is imported. The climate uniformly is controlled and moderated.
The city is inserted as much under ground as she springs towards the skies. Highest Gratte-ciel bores the clouds. The hollows of Coruscant (located in on this side layer of perpetual fog which stagnates with a few tens of meters of the ground) are among the malfamés places of the galaxy and are populated creatures ignored and dangerous even for Jedi. Contrary, the social rise is to be put in parallel with the rise at the cleanest direction of the term, on Coruscant. There is truly socio-space segregation: richest and the senior officials live in the highest buildings or the air is purified and healthy, the middle-classes some stages in lower part. All the species of the galaxy there are met. Still some lower stages, it is the territory of the criminals and other pirates. Here, there is no more system of air cleaning and it is thus particularly toxic. This territory is also dangerous because the plans are badly known except inhabitants. There are some exceptions like Dometown. Then in the basements of Coruscant, people even less advisable live than the criminals such as giant rats of 3m length.
The two rooms of the Old Republic, the dome of the Galactic Senate and the imposing pyramidal mass of the Temple Jedi capped its five hurled towers, are on Coruscant, like, later, the titanic palate of Palpatine.
The estimates of the planetary population give place to various and varied results. The numbers about the hundred of million or the billion seem ridiculously low, but one commits oneself saying that population would be of at least billion of inhabitants (not to be confused with 1 English trillion which is equivalent to 1 billion in French), that goes from oneself by taking account of an incredibly high density and a quasi-total urbanization.
Etymology
The name of Coruscant obviously finds its origin in the adjective coruscant , relatively rare in French (but who exists under an identical English orthography), and which comes from meaning Latin coruscans “shining, étincelant” (like French). Anecdote: The official French pronociation is, in the French versions of films one however hears
Source of inspiration
The capital planet of the Galactic Empire of the Star Wars , most probably, was mainly inspired by another capital planet, of another Galactic Empire, it also completely urbanized: Trantor, of the cycle of Isaac Asimov, Foundation .The town planning of scrape-sky, the vertical habitat and the very uneven social structure are, according to Alain Musset, mainly inspired by Monades urban , novel of SF of Robert Silverberg published in 1974.
