The correspondence is an exchange of Courrier generally prolonged over one long period. The term rather indicates personal exchanges of mail than administrative.

The correspondence can also become the support of a epistolary work , i.e. a regular exchange of mail whose contents have a proven literary value (if the letters are fictitious, one will speak about epistolary Roman). This aspect of the literature is particularly marked as from the 20th century, in concomitance with the development of the sociology of Article.

However, certain correspondences former to this period also knew a recognition in their time, like those of Érasme or Rene Descartes.
