Correry

The term of correry (sometimes written Corroirie or Courerie) indicates the monastery secondaire monasteries about the Chartreux, often located at several kilometers of the principal cloister. The Latin origin of Corroirie is Conredia, conreduim, and means: who is used for maintenance of the monks. The order implying a complete withdrawal of the monks of the secular life, the chartreuses ones systematically consist of two monasteries, the first lodging traditionally the monks known as “of the cloister”, alive in a strict loneliness, and Correrie, sheltering the monks known as “Convers” or “given”, who take part partially in the life of the cloister, but also deal with the relationships to outside.

The principal Father, administrator, of the correry was called Procureur.

The old correries are however from now on generally from now on abandoned, transforms in farms (in particular since the French revolution) or, as for Correrie of the Grande Chartreuse, is used of museum and reception of the visitors.

The word correry knows some variations, like “corroirie”.
