Corregidor

For the Spanish territorial function, to see Corrégidor Corregidor is an island located in the Baie of Manila at the Filipino . It is under the jurisdiction of Cavite City.

Located at 48 kilometers in the west of Manila, the island has a particular form which points out that of a Tétard with a tail being spread out in direction of the east. With its surface of 9 km ², it is on a strategic position since it divides the entry of bay of Manila into two parts in north and the south. The island of Caballo is a little more in the south of the extremity of the extension is island.

Corregidor has an important military history. It accommodated the Fort Millets and its fortifications as its landscape made up of rocks were worth to him the nickname of The Rock (the rock).

The December 30th 1941, the president Manual L. Quezon and the vice-president Sergio Osmeña inaugurated a second mandate there. During the Battle of Philippines (1941 - 1942), the American general Douglas MacArthur installed his district-general there. He remained there until the March 11th 1942, date on which he evacuated the places after the Japanese opening in the archipelago. Between the December 24th 1941 and the February 19th 1942, Corregidor again served place for the seat of the government of the the Commonwealth of Philippines.

The radio Voice off Freedom (“voice of freedom”) of USAFFE (forces of the United States in the Far East) emitted from the island. At the end of the Battle of Corregidor, the May 6th 1942, the Japanese troops forced the capitulation of the last American forces and the Philippines which resided at it.
