The term cornice is used to indicate the preparatory classes with the military special École of Saint-Cyr military school.

History

Two assumptions exist to explain the origin of name " Corniche".

The first which is most widespread, makes it go back to the Stanislas college where the first civil preparatory class to Saint-Cyr military school was open, a few years after the demolished of 1870. The pupils preparing Saint-Cyr military school were indeed accustomed to meeting under a Corniche of the main courtyard, place which they had to defend vis-a-vis the attacks of other pupils wishing to adapt it. Not arriving those by spite there would then have called them the " cornichons".

The second watch that the use of the " term; cornichon" to designate the candidates for Saint-Cyr military school is actually former to the creation of the preparatory class of Stanislas and would come from the mode of conservation of this fruit: piled up in a bottle, nickname of the time of the ESM. Name “cornice” would thus derive simply from this nickname.

In the course of time the cornices present in the civil colleges acquired a statute semi-soldier while those of military college were it fully. With the reduction in the number of candidates the civil cornices close the ones after the others in the Nineties.

In 1999, COFAT reform military preparatory classes with an aim of returning them " less militaires" and the use of the word cornice in all the military colleges banishes. However, in spite of formal prohibition, name remains used by the pupils and becomes again even official with the military national Prytanée of the Arrow.

List civil and military cornices

It should be noted that separately the Cornice General of Sonis to the ICES, the majority of the civil cornices were officially closed fault of candidates preparing the contest of the ESM in these colleges. But of the pupils semi-officially maintain some at certain places in order to make perdurer the spirit of the préparationnaires with the ESM in the civil student body.
