Cornelis Evertsen Jeunêt

Cornelis Evertsen jeunet (Vlissingen November 16th 1642 - Vlissingen November 16th 1706) was a Dutch admiral of the XVIIe century.

Cornelis was the second wire of the Lieutenant-Admiral Cornelis Evertsen Old the and the nephew of the Lieutenant-Admiral Johan Evertsen and cousin of the Vice-Amiral Cornelis Evertsen the Young person with whom it is generally confused. Cornelis was called Keesje den Duvel (" Cornelis small the diable") because of its character very coleric, which it shared with his father.

Cornelis was born with Vlissingen in 1642 and sailed for the first time on the boat of his/her father at the 10 years age. He became corsair in 1665 during the First war Anglo-Dutch and was captured at the beginning of March of this year by the English when its group of two vessels was beaten by three English ships. Its crew had to control it by employing the force to prevent it from exploding his boat, Eendragt equipped with 32 cane.

At the time of its captivity, he was considered to be worthy of royal interest thanks to the fame of his father and his uncle and was questioned by the brother of King Charles II, the Lord admiral Jacques Stuart, Duc of York. At the time of the interview, the duke noticed the hole at the top of the hat of Cornelis and excused himself in the name of the soldiers to have damaged his clothing. He answered grincheusement that he was proud hole; he would nevertheless have preferred that they drew a little low, which would have avoided to him being a prisoner of war.

John Evelyn tells how Cornelis was released on March 24th 1665 thanks to its intelligence by Charles II of England in person: " he was allowed in the royal anteroom, Its Majesty gave him its hand so that he embraces it, and gave again to him its freedom, It posed many questions concernat the combat, Its Majesty remembering the many attentions coming from Its relations abroad " - it was a reference to the support which Evertsen had given to Charles during his exile. Evelyn accepted then the order of going with him to the embassy of Holland, where it was to wait to receive its passport and it was to give him 50 gold coins. Thus Charles II did not reward only for the favors shown in the past but tried to sow the discord between the province of Zealand mainly orangist and the republican province of Holland; he claimed to support the cause of the young person Guillaume III of Orange.

After its return in 1665 Cornelis fought with the battle of Lowesoft; in July he became Capitaine of the admiralty of Zealand. In 1666 it is useful as Capitaine on the flagship of his father, Walcheren during the Bataille the 4 days and in the first night it was pilot death of his father, killed by a ball drawn from Henry.Il also fought at the time of the Bataille of the festival St James where his/her uncle was killed.

In 1673 it reconquers News-Holland, including New Amsterdam (current the New York), whereas it had the rank of Vice-admiral of the fleet of the Compagnie of the Indies Dutchwomen with always the same flagship, Zwanenburg.Quand it turned over to quay in 1674, it was shown of disobedience, the state of Zealand not being very satisfied with its conquest: its orders were in fact to conquer the Île Grey waxbill and Cayenne.

In January 1675 it was promoted Rear-admiral of the fleet zélandaise. In 1677 it supervised a blockade against the pirates of Dunkirk. September 20th 1679 it replaced his/her cousin deceased Cornelis the Young person as Vice-Amiral of Zealand; it became on April 1st, 1684 Lieutenant-Admiral de Zélande and supreme commander of the fleet of the fleet of the Linked Provinces, thus replacing Cornelis Tromp. In 1688 it ordered before-guarde fleet of invasion of the Stathouder Guillaume III of Orange during the Glorieuse Revolution.

In 1690 Cornelis was ordering before-guarde allied fleet lasting the Bataille of the course Béveziers. Supported by the English with little means, it had great difficulties vis-a-vis the French much stronger; it saved its esquadron by the trick, while putting at the anchor whereas the veils of its ship all were deployed, the wind of the tide carrying the enemy fleet. This same year Cornelis Tromp took again its its station and died shortly after, replaced by Philippe Van Almonde.

Cornelis, after 1690 ordered a fleet never again, and died in 1706 and was buried with Middelburg. His/her younger brother, Geleyn Evertsen, succeeded to him the row of Lieutenant-Admiral of Zealand. He Maria never, and was a friend very close to Guillaume III; it was known as besides that it was one of the lovers of the Stathouder.
