Corn ensilage

The Maïs is an annual herbaceous tropical plant (family of the Poacées). This plant is originating in Central America, it was introduced in Europe in XVIè century.

One can distinguish the corn ensilage from the Maïs grain. The corn ensilage is cultivated for the animal feed.

The use of the corn ensilage as a Fodder plant developed in the Sixties. Currently, 3.500.000 ha of corn ensilage are cultivated in the Northern half of Europe.

Technique of the ensilage

The corn ensilage is collected using a Ensileuse. Then the Ensilage is stored in covered heaps (anaerobic medium). The harvest of the corn ensilage is earlier than that of the corn grain. To collect the corn ensilage, the plant must still be green and the grains are not yet ripe. The ensilage is a method of conservation in Anaérobie and wet. The acidity and the anaérobiose of the medium of conservation block the development of the microbial flora responsible for the degradation of the organic matter exposed to the free air. The ensilage is distributed using a Désileuse.

Its food value

Its content of proteins is rather weak and it is low in lysin and methionine. It is thus necessary to give in addition to this food, a nitrogenized complement. The corn ensilage has a good energy value. II can bring to the cow up to 80% energy. 1,5 kg of corn, with a good nitrogenized complement, are enough to produce approximately 1 kg of Lait.

Varieties of corn ensilage

The choice of the variety is very important for the production of a corn ensilage.
