Cormery

Cormery is a common French, located in the department of Indre-et-Loire and the area Center. Its inhabitants is called Cormeriens, Cormeriennes.

History

Sit of an abbey founded in 791 by Ithier, abbot of Saint Martin's day de Tours and prochancelier of Charlemagne. It is initially a question of creating a place of meditation and more respectful prayer of the rule of Saint Benoit. It comes to make retirement there, far from the world and of its agitations: it is not whereas about a modest priory called That Saint-Paul.

Alcuin which succeeds Ithier gives to Cormery a formidable spiritual rise and, on the material plan, transforms the priory into important abbey by equipping it with important fields. That allows its successor, Fridugise, to complete great work.

In the protective shade of the abbey bind themselves many inhabitants and a borough is formed which became an important shopping mall: since 845 a market is held each Thursday

At the time of the increase of the the Loire by the Norman , the monks of Saint Martin's day put initially, the relics of their saint in safety with Cormery before being obliged to flee more in the east.

The abbey is in ruin at the beginning of the 11th century and will again be devoted in 1054.

Of 1268 with 1271, its abbot is Jean de Brosse, relative of Pierre de Brosse, near of Philippe II says the Bold one.

In 1562, Cormery is plundered by the Huguenot S at the time of the wars of religion.

In 1662, the congregation of Saint Maur recreates there a monastic community which will last until the revolution.

There remain today about it impressive vestiges, objects of studies of the historians of the area and a receipt of cakes: “macaroons of the abbey”.

  • Lantern of dead the of the 12th century. Classified with the historic buildings on December 1st, 1920 as a lantern of deaths. (It would seem that it is in fact a Croix hosannière).
