The Cordeliers is the name which the Franciscains took established in France.
Their name, which would have been allotted to them by Jean of Beaufort at the time of the Seventh crusade, comes to them from their clothing, fact of gray coarse cloth and a belt of cord.
French revolution
In 1790, this order gave its name to the Club of Cordeliers, in reference to the vault of the Couvent of Cordeliers of Paris where the club held meeting.
Nowadays
Today, Cordeliers belong, with the brothers Franciscains and the brothers capuchins with the Prime Minister Ordre of the franciscaine family. Their official name is that of brothers Conventuels or conventual minor Frères (black dress, white cord and large double cap).
