Corcieux

Corcieux is a city of the North-East of the France, chief town of canton of the department of the the Vosges in the Arrondissement of the Saint-Dié-of-Vosges. Its inhabitants is called Forfelets.

Geography

Corcieux is located in the valley of the Neuné, small right affluent of the Vologne, to 550 m of altitude. The commune is distant of 18 km the Saint-Dié-of-Vosges, of 15 km Bruyères and 15 km Gérardmer. The place is a not very broken plate, in the shape of broad basin whose altitudes remain ranging between 503 and 730 Mr. It seems acquired that a lake occupied this basin with leaving the glacial era; certain places are still marshy.

History

As of the June 6th 1944, the men of the maquis of Corcieux launched out to the attack of the occupant. A few hundreds of men against the German army, the unequal combat ended in the execution of the resistant ones. In spite of its foreseeable failure, the fighting of the maquis of Corcieux will have achieved a goal, to create in the Vosges a focal point for grievances of the occupying troops.
the November 15th 1944, moving back after the Battle of Heathers, the Germans drove out the population towards the mountain under a freezing cold and destroyed the village with the lance-flame.

Events

The Canton of Corcieux account 13 communes, for a total of 7.488 inhabitants: Arrentès-with-Corcieux, Aumontzey, Barbey-Seroux, Champdray, the Vault-in front of-Heathers, Corcieux , Gerbépal, Barn-on-Vologne, Herpelmont, the Holly-grove, Jussarupt, Rehaupal and Vienville.
