Corbeil-Essonnes
Corbeil-Essonnes is a common French, located in the department of the the Essonne (91) and the area Île-de-France. The inhabitants of Corbeil-Essonnes are called the Corbeil essonnois . Exit of the fusion of two common neighbors, Corbeil and Essonnes. It is the second city of the Département of the Essonne.
Geography
Corbeil-Essonnes is located on the edges of the the Seine. The the Essonne also passes to Corbeil and throws itself to it in the Seine.
History

With the the Middle Ages, the boats of goods bound for Paris called Corbeillard S give the word Corbillard.
- In September 1590, at the time of the head office of Paris, the Spaniard Alexandre Farnèse takes the city, which makes it possible to supply the capital besieged by Henri IV (Eighth war of religion).
- 1800 : creation of the prefectoral administration, Corbeil is a Sous-préfecture of Seine-et-Oise.
- September 17th 1840: startup of the line of Railroad Paris - Corbeil.
- 1951 : Corbeil amalgamates with Essonnes, commune adjacent. The city takes the name of Corbeil-Essonnes.
- 1966 : the city loses its statute of sub-prefecture, but the administrations remain. The prefecture of the the Essonne is temporarily installed in Corbeil-Essonnes, of 1965 with 1971, date of its transfer to the chief town Évry.
Economy
- Corbeil knew, as of the Moyen-âge, of the tanneries, of the powder mills, a rolling mill and especially the mills with flour ( Large Mills of Corbeil ) to feed Paris. Those were developed by Aymé-Stanislas Darblay thanks to the “Darblay system for the manufacture of the flour. ”
- the factory Decauville knew its hour of glory as of 1875 for harvests of beets and especially during the war of 14-18 with its railway manufacturing plant which was transplanted in Essonnes in 1881, the factory Decauville employs nearly 1000 workmen and exports his light railway material with narrow gauge railway (the famous " Decauville" carrier;) in the whole world, in 1889, the world discovered the Eiffel Tower and the portable railroad. As from 1900, it diversifies its activity to build bicycles and cars.
- paper mills of Essonnes: this place is historical, he saw the birth of the paper machine uninterrupted and is the cradle of modern paper industry. After long centuries of manual manufacture of paper, said to the tank, it is in the buildings of the paper mill of Essonnes, repurchased in 1789 by Pierre-François Didot then taken again by his/her son Leger (Didot Saint light) six years later, that Louis-Nicolas Robert developed uninterrupted in 1798 the paper machine, in buildings always upright today.

Administration
Although Corbeil-Essonnes is not any more chief town of district since the removal of the department of Seine-et-Oise, the city always shelters a sub-prefecture.Corbeil-Essonnes is chief town of two cantons:
- the Canton of Corbeil-Essonnes-Is is made of part of Corbeil-Essonnes (18 999 inhabitants);
- the Canton of Corbeil-Essonnes-West is made of part of Corbeil-Essonnes and commune of Villabé (25 211 inhabitants).
Famous characters
- Pierre-François Didot (1732 - 1795), it was named printer of the court. One of its sons, Didot Saint-Leger was distinguished by inventing the paper machine without end. A street of Essonnes bears the name of Didot Saint-Leger.

Alfred Jarry rented a house close to the Large Mills of 1873 with 1907. With five of his friends, Valette, Collière, Quillard and Hérold, he will live in community which they will name Phalanstère of Corbeil . The lease will be cancelled following inopportune rifle shots drawn by Jarry, itself.

Paul Decauville is an engineer and French business man born in 1846 and deceased in 1922. He is the inventor of a system of railway which bears its name. A street bears its name.

Pierre Waldeck-Rousseau acquires in 1899 the residence Pretty Castel in edge of the Seine. He will live there until his death in 1904. A street bears its name with dimensions Right Bank of the Seine.

Félicien Rops, painter and illustrator of reputation, comes to spend there the 15 last years of its life. A street bears its name in the center of Corbeil.

Jacques-Henri Bernardin of Saint-Pierre French writer, disciple of Rousseau and precursor of the romanticism, celebrates especially for its novel Paul and Virginia (1787), lived some time with Essonnes. A street of Essonnes bears its name.

Auguste Bluysen, architect of the Large Rex in Paris and of the Turn LU in Nantes, born in Corbeil-Essonnes in 1868.

Tourist monuments and places
- the cathedral Saint-Whorl (957-XVe). It was created to collect the relics of Saint Exupère. It is classified historic building since 1840.
- Old mill with powder: mentioned as of 1628 at the time of an explosion; a series of explosions will take place, of which that of the July 5th 1745 made 40 victims. The powder mill will close in 1822; the buildings will be reconverted in spinning mill, then mill with flour and chocolate factory.
- Large mills of Corbeil, whose lifting towers (1893) were carried out by the architect Paul Friesé in the néo-medieval eclectic style.
Same the Paul Friesé had constructed the industrial buildings of the paper mill Darblay, recently destroyed.
