The Fifties, the term “ jet set ” (n.f.) indicates the more or less mythical social category of an elite (billionaires, celebrities…) whose principal occupation (supposed) is “to have fun the festival” in places which are reserved to him (crested restaurants, reserved clubs, thermal spas or of holidays crested…). The expression “jet set” also refers, in the popular imagery, with the idea of privileged caste: the members of the “jet set” are those which have the means of benefitting from the life without working, in opposition to the people, with the proletarian.

Although there exists an obvious proximity of direction, the expression “jet set” is not completely synonymous with expressions “VIP” (resulting from years 80-90) or “people” (years 2000). “Jet set”, on the one hand, does not imply necessarily the celebrity and, on the other hand, evokes today the idea of “well born company” or “refined, well educated company”, always in opposition to the people, supposed to miss education and of good taste.

If, in the beginning, the expression “jet set” were used, of outside, to designate the members of a social category, she is asserted today, of the interior, by her members in order to mark their difference compared to the other privileged categories: the members of the “jet set” regard themselves today readily as “the elite of the elite”.

The expression “jet set” also indicates the cultural aristocracy of the large international metropolises (Paris, London, New York, Brussels) and approaches, in this direction of the expressions “bottin society man”, “gratin”, or “Establishment”.

Etymology

“Jet set” is a loan of English Jet-society , i.e., literally, " people who move in jet ".

The first commercial line served by jets between London and New York is brought into service the May 2nd 1952. Only an elite restricted there has access then. The expression appears then to indicate, in a caricatural way, this part of the company which has the sufficient means to use these means of transport. Today, the expression lost a little its direction, insofar as the voyage by plane became relatively banal, one says rather than the jet set is the population which travels in private jet.

The expression was also forged on the idea that the jet was an extremely fast plane (at least for its time), comparable idea with the " rapidité" life of the members of the jet set, considered to carry out a vibrating life.

A principle of self-sufficiency

The jet set exists above all through popular magazines such as Gala or Paris Match which relays the activity of these people. It is neither a culture, nor a style, but she is rather seen as an aristocracy which invented itself.

The values representing the jet set are the money, the fashion, appearance, extravagance and good mood with excess. More than one social environment, it rather refers to a way of living its life like a spectacle where the concepts of taboo and bad taste are all relative.

Among the characters who caused this concept, Tom Ford with Gucci reinvented an extravagant style, giving desire to d'" people; être" jet set.

M6 had described the Jet set thus in a band announces of one of its emissions: " they are beautiful, rich or famous, seldom the three at the same time ".

Who?

It is the cream of the cream, the elite.

In the Jet set one finds many characters but all the time most known nor those which one would recognize in the street.
