Coral sea

The Mer of Coral is a zone located beyond the north-eastern coast of the Australia, having a chain of islands not inhabited of the same name, including the Willis islands, Coringa and Tregosse.

The Coral Sea is named thus because of its main feature, the Grande barrier of coral, which is largest coral Récif of the world.

It is coarsely delimited by Australia in the west, the the Solomon Islands in north, Vanuatu in the east and the New Caledonia in the south. It communicates with the Mer of Arafura in the east through the Détroit of Torres between Australia and New Guinea and opens in the North-West on the Mer of Solomon.

The territory of the Îles of the Coral Sea is a property of Australia, managed Canberra by the Australian Department of the Environment.
