Coracle
A coracle is a primitive type of Bateau. It is a light boat, of form more or less oval, and made up of a fabric tended on a framework in basket making, and coated Goudron to make it tight. According to the old writers the framework was formerly covered with leather of horse or bull.
These boats are so light and portables which the fisherman can easily carry it on his shoulders of at his place in the water level. Fishing in coracle is practiced with two, each one sitted in its coracle, a hand holding the net and the other actuating the paddle. When a fish is taken, each one goes up its end of the net until both coracles touch.
This primitive type of boat was used at the Bretons at the time of the invasion of Jules César, which left a description of it, and even used some during its countryside of Spain.
They were historically widespread in the British Isles, but one sees any today, seldom, only in sectors of the west of the Wales and Shropshire, particularly on the River Severn. The Welsh rivers Teifi and Tywi are the best places to see coracles in Wales, though the types of coracle differ according to the river.
The Currach Irish or curragh is a boat similar, but more important, which is always of use. Curachs were also used in the west of the Scotland:
-
“the curach or boat of leather and wicker can seem today a vehicle far from sure, to which to make confidence on the tempêtueuses seas, however our fathers delivered themselves without fear in these weak vehicles to the thank you of the most violent time. One made of it formerly great use in the Western islands of Scotland, and one always finds some in Wales. The structure is named Gaëlique crannghail , a word used with Uist to indicate a precarious boat. ” (Refers: Dwelly' S Gaelic Dictionary : Curach )
Currachs of the Spey river were particularly similar to the coracles.
Other boats are of the same type: Bullboat of the Indians of America, Iraqi Gufa, Indian Parisal, the Vietnamese Thung-Wine storehouse, and Ku-Dru and Kowas of Tibet.
