Coppo di Marcovaldo
Coppo di Marcovaldo (Florence, 1225 - 1276) is an Italian painter, considered as one of the Masters of the Tuscan painting of the 13th century.
Biography
Information is missing on its artistic origin and its studies.The table preserved at the Museum of the sacred arts of San Casciano in Valley di Pesa, a pediment of furnace bridge with the representation of the holy archangel Michel and six episodes of his life was recently and unanimously allotted by the experts to Coppo di Marcovaldo; it is thus its oldest work, carried out with the softening with silvering and varnished mecca before the Bataille of Montaperti, therefore indicativement between 1255 and 1260.
The Madonna del Bordone is her only unquestionable, signed and dated work 1261, painted for with His, where he is imprisoned because of his presence in this city and is regarded as pertaining to the Sienan school.
The Virgin haloed in the center, sitting on a throne, two angels at her sides, holding the child also haloed on her knees, which holds in his left hand the Book of the Law. The two characters are represented of face in a hieratic position where the Byzantine influence is manifest.
In 1265, it paints with fresco the Saint-Jacob vault of the cathedral of Pistoia. For this same cathedral, it paints in 1274, with his son Salerno, several tables, now disappeared, as well as a crucifix, always in place.
Coppo takes share with extraordinary decoration in mosaic of the holy baptistry Jean of Florence by building some paperboards. He returns to him the visionary the Christ of the last Judgment , which one can go back between 1260 and 1270 whose mosaic is extremely rich, undoubtedly innovating to an iconographic point of view; it is quoted among the masterpieces of the 13th century.
