History
The beautiful castle which dominates the locality had, since the beginning of the XIXe century, focused on him only the attention of the greatest number: because it had been almost assigned there with residence, Madam de Staël had then gathered around it, in Coppet, the elite of the thought and the consciences in fight against the Napoleonean imperialism. " Coppet, place where the genius had blown! … " According to Stendhal, the general states of the European opinion had been held there. has Coppet, had habit to say the baillif de Bonstetten, it was spent more spirit in one day than in the rest of the world in one year! The nostalgic ones of a historical presence as remote as Roman with Coppet had begun to dream, the day when a charming statuette bronzes Mercure representative of it had been found at the edge of the lake. A Minister for the saint Gospel, J.L.B. Leresche, translating of German the Dictionary geographical-statistics of Switzerland of its fellow-member Lutz, Pasteur de Laufelfingen, published in 1836, it had not evoked in its article Coppet, of the Roman inscriptions found in the surroundings and transported to Geneva ; they were found, indeed. It is true that the saint man also evoked in this same article the plains close to Coppet in which, in 1029, the troops of the emperor Henri II Saint, ordered by three brothers of the House of Habsbourg, had beaten an army of Burgundian… . Curious confrontation in truth, that which should have opposed in the plains close to Coppet the last dynaste of dead Ottoniens Saxon two years before, founder of the Holy roman Empire, in Habsbourg which Europe hardly knew at that time!
In fact, the addition of the improbabilities imports little, since in XIe century, Coppet did not exist!
