Summary

Francis Coplan is found this time in Turkey, with Istambul to inquire into the assassination of an old scientist.

Mara, that Coplan liked formerly, attended the murder, but itself is killed and Coplan precipitated in the the Bosphorus. He escapes from it and the survey which he carries out and which obstructs the Turkish lieutenant of police force, makes him to côtoyer picturesque characters, in particular a strange sculptor, Théler, and a dancer, Eva, disconcerting double of Mara. The beautiful one disappears from its cabaret and Coplan, guided by Théler, discovers, in Eastern Turkey the castle which dominates the Gardens of the Devil. It is the den of Hugo, the proper brother of Mara, ready to destroy the cities in the name of disarmament. Coplan which found Mara " or Eva" , any support with Hugo refuses. It is tracked like an animal in the valley of the Sepulchres. He manages to save his skin. Hugo chooses death by radiations, involving his sister in the destruction.
