Copihue

The copihue ( Lapageria rosea ) is the national flower of the Chile.

It pushes in the wood of the center and the south of the Chile between Valparaiso and Osorno (with thousand kilometers in the south of Santiago of Chile). It can exceed the ten meters height while clinging on the trees. The flowers are resistant and the sheets of oval form, hard and of colors pink or red.

The copihue, flower characteristic of the grounds of the south of the Chile is often used in various legends mapuche (Indian of the south of Chile). One of these legends tells that warriors surviving of the various battles, went up in the trees to see the result of the battle. By seeing their died comrades, these survivors cried and their tears were transformed into flower of blood. Thus the copihues make it possible to remember the spirits of the dead soldiers.
