OAO-3 ( Orbiting Astronomical Observatory 3 ) was a satellite dedicated to the observation in the fields of the Ultraviolet and the x-rays. Launched on August 21st, 1972 and in service until February 1981, it was renamed Copernicus for the 500e birthday of the Astronome Polish Nicolas Copernic.

Result of a collaboration between NASA, the Science and Engineering Research Council and two English universities, it constitutes more succeeded of the satellites of the program Orbiting Astronomical Observatory .

History

Satellite OAO-3, of a mass of 2150 kg, is launched the August 21st 1972 by a launcher Atlas Centaur. Copernicus collects spectra of high-resolution of hundreds of star S, Galaxie S and Planet S. Between 1972 and February 1981, it provides 551 spectra of celestial objects, mainly brilliant stars.
