Copa Sudamericana

The Copa Sudamericana is an international competition of football which is played each year between clubs of South America and CONCACAF. Although less prestigious than the Copa Libertadores for historical and financial reasons, it joins together of them less the best clubs of the continent. Indeed, while the Libertadores is generally held between January and July, the Sudamericana is held between August and December, making it possible the best clubs of the continent to twice a year find itself. For all, it is a continuation of the Copa Conmebol.

The winner of the Copa Sudamericana faces then, at the time of the Recopa Sudamericana, the winner of the Copa Libertadores. The team gaining this final confrontation can be regarded as the best club of Latin America.

History

Copa Sudamericana was creates in 2002 to replace the Copa Conmebol (disputed 1992 with 1999), the Copa Mercosur and the Copa Merconorte (both disputed 1998 with 2001).

At the time of the edition of 2005, three teams of CONCACAF (cd. United (the USA), Pumas UNAM (MEX) and América (MEX)) took part in the second tower of the competition.

Course of the competition

The competition proceeds in two eliminatory towers. At the time of the first turn, the teams of the same group meet (for example, list of the groups in 2005: Argentina - Brazil - Chile/Peru - Bolivia/Ecuador - Uruguay/Paraguay - Colombia /Venezuela). The qualified teams meet those of another group (club of the same country or another country) or of CONCACAF at the time of a second round.

A last phase, by matches outward journey and return, with quarters finale, semi-finals and finale then makes it possible to designate the winner of the cut.
