Cop-on-Yews is a common department of the Calvados, in the area Basse-Normandie, in France.

Geography

History

Origin of the name: Gallic condate “confluent” and ivos , “yew” or anthroponyme Gallic Iccius .

The presence of a menhir attests an old occupation of the site.

The necropolis extends on the Eastern edge from the plate dominating left bank from the valley from Laizon. It is composed of the south towards the north of a first monument on the commune of Ernes, which was excavated of 1985 to 1990. Six others tumuli were put at the day with the locality it Heather-of-Hamel.

The study of the site revêt a considerable scientific interest, contributing to the knowledge of the communities of farmers occupying this part of the plain of Caen. Research still takes place every summer.

The territory is undoubtedly occupied at the time Roman. Being located on a valley, rare topography in the plain of Caen, Cop-on-Yews are a privileged site, the access having facilitated the human establishment.

In 1848, creation of the commune by the meeting of Cop-on-Laizon and of Yew-on-Laizon.
