Cooper Union
The Cooper Union for the Advancement off Science and Art (Cooper Union for the development of science and art) or more usually Cooper Union is an establishment of enseingement higher located in the district of Lower Manhattan, with New York. It is a question of the one of the only establishments of the the United States to propose private lessons with the whole of the allowed students. The infrastructures of Cooper Union are located in the East Village, in the neighborhoods of the Cooper Square and of the Astor Place, in a space delimited by the Third Avenue, the 6erue, and the 9erue. The establishment delivers Diplôme S of Architecture, Ingénierie, and of course of Art, and belonged to the Association off Independent Colleges off Art and Design which gathers thirty-six schools of art distributed on the American territory.

A very significant part of the budget of the school rests on gifts coming from powerful associations of former students, as well in the public sector as private. Good number of former students of the school of Engineer S ( School off Engineering ) became important figures at the same time in the field of the Ingénierie, but also in the policy fields, like the organization governmental. The school of Architecture and Art as for it made of many artists and famous architects, like Herb Lubalin, Eva Hesse, John Hejduk, Chuck Hoberman, Daniel Libeskind or Milton Glaser.
History
Cooper Union was founded in 1859, by the Industriel Peter Cooper, which was a prolific inventor and a brilliance contractor. Peter Cooper was the son of a workman, and had received less than one year of secondary education. However, it became industrial and inventor, and it is him which designed and built the first Locomotive with vapor of the the United States. Cooper made fortune with a factory of adhesive, and a Fonderie of iron. Then, it used its talents of contractor in crowned projects of success in the Immobilier, the Assurance S, the Railroad and the Télégraphie. He was even candidate with the presidency of the country at the end of the Années 1860, whereas he was the principal investor and first president of the Newfoundland & London Telegraph Co. , which undertook one of the most monumental projects of the XIXe century: the first cable to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Cooper also invented the Gélatine with the assistance of his wife, Sarah, who added fruits to what was going to become celebrates it Jello .
CooperUnion commança by teaching free with adults, in courses of night in sciences applied, architectural drawing, just as in Photography, Telegraphy, Typewriter and Typewriting, but only for the women. Any discrimination based on the “race” or the religion or the sex was expressly prohibited. Horace Greeley and William Cullen Bryant belonged to the first promotions.
These free courses (essential in the history of the the United States, and at the origin of the Continuing education) were transformed thereafter into three distinct schools composing the Cooper Union for the Advancement off Science and Art : the School off Art (school of Art), the Irwin S. Chanin School off Architecture (school of Architecture and the Albert Nerken School off Engineering (school of Engineer S). Thomas Edison and Felix Frankfurter also studied in Cooper Union, and it is in the school that the National Association for the Advancement off Colored People as well as the international Mouvement of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent were created. Susan Anthony also had his offices there.
The objective of Cooper was to give to the talented young people that of which it had missed: a good education. He wanted to also make possible the development of the talents which, if not, could have been lost. Its dream, to propose a teaching “equal to best” became reality. Since 1859, Cooper Union formed of the thousands of artists Architecte S, and Engineer S, of which some are leadres in their respective fields.
