Coop federate

Coop federate is a Coopérative agricultural producers of the Quebec which began under the name of Coopérative federated from Quebec in 1922.

History

At the beginning of the 20th century, two thirds of the Inhabitants of Quebec live in the countryside, along the plain of the the St. Lawrence. Agriculture dominates and some co-operatives are setting-up to supply the farmers and to process their products starting from the vote of the Law of 1908 on the agricultural cooperatives.

The December 29th 1922, a law allows the creation of Coop federate of Quebec by the fusion of three co-operative power stations: the Co-operative of the cheesemongers of Quebec , the co-operative Counter of Montreal and the Company of the producers of seeds of Holy-Rosalie . The head office of the co-operative is installed in Montreal with a network of branches through the Province and the provincial government takes an active part in the financing and the promotion of the principles of operation of the co-operative.

The federate Coopérative of Quebec is touched hard by the recession which follows the stock exchange crash of 1929 but receives a governmental support for the assistance to overcome the crisis. It is then active in four sectors: butters and cheeses, manures food, mineral seeds and manures and the sale of the products of the farm. The dairy sector, a fierce competition perdure enters Coop federate and the co-operative Counter, set up in 1929 by the Union of the catholic farmers (UCC), trade union of farmers. The Counter finally is integrated in the active of Coop federated in 1938. Lastly, in 1939, a hundred co-operative trade unions are affiliated with the federate Co-operative of Quebec, thus creating the unit within the co-operative movement.

Starting from 1945, the federate Coopérative of Quebec modernizes its avicolous installations and its flour-millings and makes the promotion of the mechanized draft of milk to the farm. It on our premises launches its own sound magazine starting from 1948 after having had a co-operative chronicle starting from 1938 in the magazine the Earth of of the Union of the catholic farmers .

The federate Coop of Quebec became a large company during the Second world war. The number of employees triples in a few years. In the middle of the Years 1950, the company employs more than one thousand of people. It buys in 1955 the company Legrade , specialized in the demolition and the marketing of the meats. In 1958, following a need expressed by the farmers, it adds the oil products to its offer of service.

It will continue its progression until our days by buying certain companies and while amalgamating with others. It changes name for that of Coop federate into 2004.

Structure

It is now made up of a hundred affiliated co-operatives, property of 51.000 members. Coop federate and its affiliated co-operatives employ more than 14.000 people and cumulate a turnover exceeding the 5 billion Canadian dollars in 2006. Here some marks and companies known in Quebec which it still had or has:
  • the food Olymel is the largest Canadian exporter of products of Porc and Volaille.

  • the Groupe Lactel was the most important private exporter of dairy products in Canada and was sold with Agropur in 2000.
  • oils Sonic is the first Québécois distributer to offer a fuel containing gasoline added with ethanol.
