Convergence and Union

Convergence and Union ( Convergència I Unió in Catalan, shortened in CiU ) are a political clout of Catalogne.
Origins
It is a permanent coalition of two parties Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya (CDC) founded in 1974 and the democratic Union of Catalonia (UDC) founded in 1931. These two parties arised jointly to all the elections starting from the end of the year seventy. CiU controlled the Generalitat de Catalunya of 1980 with 2003.

- Unió Democràtica de Catalunya : Union Démocratique of Catalonia is democratic Christian.
Direction
Jordi Pujol, historic leader of the party, yielded the presidency of CiU to Artur Mas in January 2001. Since April 2004, its spokesperson with the Congrès of the deputies is Josep Antoni Duran I Lleida.
Electoral results
- Spanish legislative Elections (March 2004): 3.23% and 10 deputies (- 5)
- Catalan Regional elections (November 2006): 31.52% and 48 seats (+2)
Note:: at the time of the regional elections of 2006, CiU was (for the third consecutive time) the second party in term of votes, but the first in term of seats (because of electoral law in force in Catalonia).
